Tales From The Odyssey was $1.99 on Amazon for Kindle recently, so I snatched it up thinking Felicity might enjoy it. The reviews were good, and many mentioned that the whole family was enjoying it.
During Advent and Christmas, we stuck to read-alouds that were more applicable, but a few nights ago, I pulled this out thinking we'd give it a go and see what happens.
I read The Odyssey when I was in high school (didn't we all?), and then it was a lady's book club selection when I lived in Wyoming. In Wyoming, I only got through the first bit of it, at the time my bookshelf was bursting with other things that I preferred to read and it wasn't really capturing my attention.
For an introduction to Greek mythology and the story of Odysseus' adventures, I'm happy with this book so far! I hope that when they are older and ready to read the "real thing," it'll be like revisiting old friends. My girls are completely enthralled and just beg me to keep reading!
Sometimes I feel like maybe visions of a Cyclopes crushing dudes and eating them for breakfast might not be the best thing ever before we proceed with night prayer and a round of "sweet dreams!"
Maybe it's just me, but as a kid the mere thought of Circe turning my friends into wild beasts would throw me into a month's worth of crazy dreams. In fact, that could even happen to me tonight! ha
All kidding aside, it's a really exciting relief to have moved on from some of the boring drivel of littler kid story books. I've always felt guilty about not loving to read out loud to my kids like all the other moms seemed to, especially because it's something I am admittedly good at! Something about the kinds of books they can enjoy now is just so much more exciting. And things don't rhyme. (Seriously, am I the only one who feels this way? I mean, I still do it and try not to let on!)
Also, I'd discovered that the Kindle Fire is PERFECT for bed time read-alouds. Since it's back lit, I can turn the bedroom lights off and often this little angel falls asleep while the older girls listen to the story with rapt attention and ask me all kinds of questions like, "what's a cannibal?" and "who is Hermes again?" and "so, wait the evil witch is beautiful?" It's just great fun.
Are you reading anything great with your elementary aged children right now? I'd love some suggestions for when we get through this epic story!
For myself, I also scored the entire Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis for $1.99 a book a few weeks back. I've read Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra already in the last week and a half, and I'm going to get started on That Hideous Strength tomorrow. Science-fiction is SO not my genre of choice, but I do love C.S. Lewis, and $1.99 is a steal for a Kindle book so I took a chance on them. They're not what I was expecting at all.
I'm just so sad I've never read these books before. They are beautiful. I've had to take a few days after each one just to process everything. Check them out if you're looking for some good fiction!

Some of my kiddos are reading The Odyssey in class and they seem to be enjoying it!
ReplyDelete(As a side note, I have found the "Classic Starts" series to be great for my second graders. They can be read alone or outloud and it's a great intro to the real book!)
As for a read aloud I am reading The Tale of Despereaux. It's not a classic, but the story line is laced with the fight between goodness and evil and being a virtuous person. My kids LOVE it. It's also really fun for me to read aloud. I always get cries of "one more chapter!" when I'm through.
Morgan I love these ideas! Thanks!!
DeleteWe've read The Tale of Despereaux, the girls loved it. I think I'll get Gab on some of these Classic Starts books. They seem to be right at her level.
My kids love our night time read-alouds. Some of the books we have read are: the whole little house series, Huck Finn, Black Beauty, Oliver Twist, and Swiss Family Robinson. One of the favorites when they were a little younger was Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. It is such a fun and silly book but also teaches some good lessons. If you are interested in any of these books, we own them all and can pass them along!! Hope your back is feeling better!!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh we love little house. We are mid-series. I must finish it!
DeleteThe girls used to get Mrs. Piggle Wiggle on CD all. the. time. in Lander. They thought it was so funny!
"so, wait the evil witch is beautiful?"
ReplyDeleteYour kids ask such great questions!!
Also, That Hideous Strength is really deep. I read it when I was 14, and I know I need to reread the whole trilogy with the benefit of a couple of decade's experience.
You should Paul! I love having the benefit of many years between reads. It changes the whole thing.
Deleteone of our all time favs (and I believe we've discussed this already) was Ann of Green Gables. I KNOW the girls will love it! BTW,, so excited to see you blogging again!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cindy! :-) YES! I must read that to them! I think I can get that free on my Kindle too...hmmmm... I'm going to go investigate right now.
DeleteThe hard copy is in the Christmas book box in my bedroom :) I forgot I bought it for the girls at the dollar store before Christmas.
DeleteSounds fun! We just started Swallows & Amazons which I saw recommended on a few blogs :) Hoping to start reading a Blessed Imelda book or King of the Golden City with Ellie for FHC prep, too.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of that Blair. I'll check it out! Let me know what you find on Blessed Imelda! Felicity has a nice bio in her FHC Bible, and that was the first I had heard of her. Have you guys heard the Glory Stories with her story on it also?
DeleteYes, yes, reading classic literature to the children - that's great. Now let's talk about that quilt the Kindle is on... I love that! I don't remember seeing it in the Mercer house before. So pretty. And speaking of pretty - I like the new blog look. And now back to books. The book club in Wyo read "That Hideous Strength" and I struggled with it. The discussion afterward helped, but I remember now that I intended to go back and read the other two and never did.
ReplyDeletePS - our girls use their "castle people" to act out scenes from "The Odyssey" (sorry - can't properly punctuate in a com box) and it cracks me up. They love trying to sound like the Sirens :)
HAHA Thanks Colleen! Felicity and Gab do have new matching bedding pretty recently... I love the ease of washing quilts.
DeleteYou've got to go back and read the other two for sure! They really are beautiful.
Oh my. The part about reading rhyming books is SO TRUE. Dante's favorite books are by Dr. Seuss. I have them almost completely memorized and particular phrases that people say will set off the "casette tape" inside my brain. UGH. Maybe someday I'll laugh about it......
